Helicopter Landing Zones 31:48
Lesson 1: 7:00
History & Importance
There is no national standard for creating safe landing zones. As a result, many LZ’s are faulty at best. In most cases, the pilot has the final say as to whether he/she lands the craft and will not do so if the landing zone is not secure. This series will look at why safe landing zones are so important and will give you the basics to look at your agency’s protocols. It will provide initial training for new members, strengthen the background of seasoned pros and is compatible to all helicopter operations.
Lesson 2: 5:00
This month we offer a training bonus. With the help of Smith-Cook Training Corporation,
presents the basics of setting up a helicopter landing zone. We cover the issues of LZ size, slope and surface of landing area, wind and speed direction, obstructions, and approaches. Safety considerations and communication with the flight crew are emphasized.
Lesson 3: 7:48
In this segment the emphasis is on proper communications. As the ground crew you are the eyes for the incoming flight crew. More specifically, it is the job of the LZ Commander to communicate with the pilot on both patient and LZ conditions This segment gives you additional considerations to help you communicate clearly and concisely and tell you why it’s imperative to have this set in advance. Look for enhanced training on this topic in this print material. Next month, we’ll give you more safety considerations and discuss the importance of agency interaction and mutual aid.
Lesson 4: 7:40
Mutual Aid & Agency Interaction
Long before you need air medical services, you need to know who you can call for help. You also need to know the duties and responsibilities of other responding agencies. This segment reminds you to get your mutual aid responders together before the incident. It also helps define what the roles should and could be on major incidents. Above all, this segment shows how the team concept and organizational skills practiced beforehand will lead to a successful and safe transport of trauma patients. Next month, we guide you through several LZ setups.
Lesson 5: 4:20
As this series concludes, we review some safety considerations and cover points for a one-, three-, four- and five-vehicle setup. We remind you that this series is designed to be used in conjunction with training provided by specialists in landing zone operations. It should not be used as the sole base of information.
